The Federal and Zamfara State governments have been urged to implement a robust policy to checkmate the activities of mining site owners in the state.

The call was made in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital, by professional farmer Alhaji Muhammad Aliyu during a press briefing.

Aliyu stated that the influx of bandits into the state is linked to mining businesses, noting that most of these bandits are not Zamfara indigenes but are brought into the state by some mining site operators.

“There are over 3,000 legal and illegal mining sites in the state. Many of the individuals mining the solid minerals are not even Nigerians, but foreigners,” he added.

He acknowledged that security operatives have been making efforts but noted that banditry continues to persist.

According to Aliyu, both the federal and state governments have exhausted all necessary strategies to end banditry in the state, but to no avail.

“We cannot continue to suffer at the hands of bandits for more than a decade. It is clear that these bandits are using the mining sites as cover.”

Aliyu further stated that the banditry affecting the entire state has led to food insecurity, as farmers are unable to carry out their farming activities.
